Background

The Colleferro cement plant was the first in Italy planned to produce pozzolanic hydraulic binders, originally under the umbrella of "Italian company for the production of lime and cement of Segni". In 1992, Italcementi Group acquired the Colleferro plant. In 2016, HeidelbergCement AG completed the acquisition of Italcementi Group. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Colleferro plant underwent significant technological upgrades, including the modernization of the oven's CTP filter, modernization of oven 1 and oven 2, installation of the SNCR system for non-catalytic reduction nitrogen oxides to furnace emissions, and installation of the Continuous Emissions Monitoring System of the two clinker cooking lines. These modernizations aimed to enhance production efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and minimize environmental impact.

In 2018, the plant implemented a program to utilize alternative fuels, such as processed waste materials, to replace traditional fossil fuels in the cement production process. Also in 2018, The European Cement Research Academy (ECRA) launched an oxyfuel carbon capture pilot project at the plant. The test phase of the research was expected to cost Euro80m.
