Background

The Fieni cement plant was established in 1914 and was, according to some reports, once the largest cement plant in Europe. It was privatized in the 1990s by the local subsidiary of international cement giant Heidelberg Materials, and operates with a significantly reduced workforce and capacity of approximately 2.5 million tonnes per year.
