Background

A meeting about the Helvacı EIA was held in September 2016.

The EIA for the project was cancelled in November 2018. A representative of the Çan Environmental Association said the cancellation was due to the sponsor's failure to provide all of the necessary information for the EIA process. As of November 2021 the project had not progressed in more than four years, and appears to be cancelled.

In September 2024, speculation surrounding Helvacı power station had a resurgence. However, the Çan Environmental Association reiterated confirmation from government officials that the plant would not be built.
