Holíč Coal Mine

From Global Energy Monitor

The Holíč Coal Mine, also known as the Čáry coal mine, is an underground mine located in Čáry, Western Slovakia.

The mine's operations were suspended in October 2022 due to complex geological conditions. If it reopens, it will only operate until the end of 2023.

Background

The mine was owned Bana Cary AS. The company was previously owned by Bana Dolina Company, but was acquired by Hornonitrianske bane Prievidza (HBP) in 2015, thus consolidating all lignite mines in Slovakia.[1] It appears that Bana Cary AS was dissolved and the coal mine consolidated under Hornonitrianske bane Prievidza (HBP).[2]

Baňa Čáry is the youngest lignite mine in Slovakia. Lignite has been mined here since the early 1990s.[3]

As of 2018, the mine extracted around 170 thousand tonnes of lignite per year from a working depth of 180 metres, and planned to expand production to reach 350 thousand to 500 thousand tonnes.[4]

In October 2022 operations at the mine have been suspended due to complex technical and geological conditions, which are related to natural conditions.[5] A total of 222 employees worked on the surface and underground. Some of them were transferred to still productive workplaces in Nováky coal mine. The decision to continue mining in 2023 was said to depend on the stabilization of hydrogeological conditions, assessment of the situation and technical possibilities. However all coal mining should have ceased in Slovakia by the end of 2023.[3][6]
