Background

In 2021, owner Holcim signed a contract to provide their Lagerdorf and Hover cement plants with 30,000MWh of offshore wind power. Also in 2021, Holcim signed a memorandum of understanding with Holcim Deutschland to deliver a carbon capture system for a carbon capture and storage trial. The system was installed by Cool Planet Technologies based on Hereon’s PolyActive membrane technology, and ran from 2022-2023, with subsequent expansions planned for 2024 and 2026. In 2024, Cool Planet Technologies raised €23.7m in funding to support the development of Cool Planet's ‘low-energy, low-cost’ membrane-based carbon capture technology. It will also go towards the construction of a new membrane manufacturing facility at the Höver cement plant.
