Background on Project
Inner Mongolia Huineng Coal Electricity Group is seeking approval for a 2 x 660 MW ultra-supercritical coal plant in Weijiamao town.[4][5] It was planned for operation in 2017.[6]
In October 2017 the power station was permitted for construction. It will support electricity transmission from Xilingol to Tianjin. As a power export project, it is likely exempted from restrictions on new coal plants under China's "red light" policy.[7][8]
In August 2018 it was reported that construction had begun.[9]
In May 2023, Unit 1 began operating.[10] In June 2023, Unit 2 began operating.[11]
A 2 x 660 MW Phase II of Huineng Changtan power station was reportedly permitted in early 2023. Construction of the power station was slated to begin in August 2023.[12]
In September 2023, the Environmental Impact Assessment for Phase II was officially approved.[13]
