Liberty Steel Dunaferr Dunaújváros steel plant, also known as Dunaferr Nagyolvasztó és Konverteres Acélgyártómű, Danube Ironworks (predecessor), ISD Dunaferr (predecessor), is a blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steel plant operating in Dunaújváros, Fejér, Hungary.

Background

ISD Dunaferr steel was one of the biggest Hungarian steel plant employing around 4500 staff.[1] The plant has two blast furnaces with a combined capacity of 1.2 mtpa of pig iron, and two 135 ton basic oxygen furnaces with a total crude steel production capacity of 1.6 mtpa.[2]

In 2020, when the company struggled to maintain its production due to mismanagement and dispute between the owners, the company began cutting costs at the expense of its workers without consulting the trade union. The union protested after this, which was followed by the company suspending four union leaders on December 11, 2020.[3]

One of the blast furnaces was shut down in mid-2022, followed by close down of the second blast furnace on 16 September, 2022. According to the company, the immediate reason for the shut down was the unexpected refusal of Austria-based Donau Brennstoffkontor GmbH to supply raw coke.[4] In December 2022, Budapest municipal court put the plant into liquidation. The plant restarted blast furnace No. 2 in February 2023.[2]

In July 2023, Liberty Steel acquired the Dunaferr plant for €55 million.[2] On 20 September, 2023 Liberty Steel group and China's CISDI Engineering Co. formed a partnership in collaboration with the Hungarian Ministry of Economic Development, to prepare a decarbonisation pathway for the Dunaferr steel works. This will involve a shift from coal based steel production to Electric Arc Furnace technology by installing a furnace of 150t capacity, offsetting direct CO2 emissions by approximately 80%.[5]
