The Ib Valley Bandhabal coal mines are a 95 million ton-per-annum (MTPA) network of opencast mines, operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, in the Ib Valley coalfield in Odisha state, India.[1]

As of 2019, the company has proposed expansions of the mines totaling between 26 to 46 MTPA.[1]

The operating mines in the Ib Valley, include: Basundhara, Garjanbahal, Kulda mines, Siarmal, the Integrated Belpahar-Lakhanpur-Lilari Project, Samleswari mines and Lajkura.[2]

In 2020, the Lilari mine is mothballed and non producing.

Background on Mine

The 95 million ton-per-annum Ib Valley coal mines are owned by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of state-owned Coal India).[3]

Expansions

In 2013, the Ib Valley expansion projects included Gopalji- Kaniha opencast project (30 MTPA), Kulda-Garjanbahal Expansion (40 MTPA), and Lajkura-Orient Expansion (15 MTPA).[3], but these have all been shelved and likely canceled.
