Background
The Indominco Mandiri Coal Mine is a coal mining operation in Indonesia. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of PT Indo Tambangraya Megah Tbk (ITM), which is itself a subsidiary of the Banpu Group[11]. Banpu Minerals (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. holds a 65.14% stake in ITM[11]. The mine is located in East Kalimantan, spanning the regencies of Bontang, Kutai Kartanegara, and East Kutai, with a concession area of 24,121 hectares. It has been in commercial operation since 1997[11][12][13].
The mine produces subbituminous thermal coal with a calorific value ranging from 5,600 to 6,200 kcal/kg and a sulfur content of 0.70% to 1.80%[11]. In 2024, the mine produced 7.35 million tonnes of coal[12]. Production targets for subsequent years are 7.30 million tonnes in 2025, 8 million tonnes in 2026, and 7.10 million tonnes in 2027[12]. These targets are adjusted to reflect the current reserve estimates of approximately 45 million metric tons[12].
The mine's operational permit is a Coal Contract of Work (PKP2B) that is set to expire on March 31, 2028[11].
