Integrated Isaac Plains Project

From Global Energy Monitor

The Integrated Isaac Plains Project includes several mines: Isaac Plains, Isaac Plains East, and Isaac Plains underground. Each of these mines has a different status, with Isaac Plains on care and maintenance, Isaac Plains East operating, and Isaac Plains underground proposed and not yet approved.[1]

The mines are located approximately 7 kilometres south east of the town of Moranbah in the Bowen Basin region of central Queensland. They are owned by Stanmore Coal.

Stanmore also owns the Isaac Downs mine to the south of Isaac Plains and Isaac Plains East.

According to Stanmore Coal's website in June 2020, "Stanmore Coal acquired Isaac Plains in November 2015, after the operation was placed in care and maintenance in late 2014 by the previous owners. Stanmore recommenced mining at the Isaac Plains Mine in January 2016 and transitioned to the current operations at Isaac Plains East from July 2018 through to January 2019. All mining operations now occur at Isaac Plains East."[2]

The Isaac Plains Complex incorporates the operating Isaac Plains East mine, the Isaac Plains mine which ceased operation in 2018, the Isaac Plains Underground development project, and operating assets including the dragline, coal handling plant, infrastructure facilities and train load out.[2]

The status of the underground development as of June 2020 was this: "The Bankable Feasibility Study completed in FY19 confirmed the financial viability of the Underground project with potential production of on average 1.2Mt saleable per annum from year 2 of the production plan. Given this production capacity, when combined with open cut sources from Isaac Plains East and Isaac Downs, the Consolidated Entity does not currently have enough capacity at the existing CHPP or contracted port capacity. Given these constraints, a decision on the Underground project will be deferred until additional port and CHPP capacity is secured, or until mining at the Isaac Downs project is largely completed." As a result the underground project is currently shelved.
