Background
The Itacoatiara power station is part of a proposed gas-to-power project that also calls for the construction of a floating LNG terminal known as the Itacoatiara FSRU to supply gas to the plant. The environmental impact assessment for the Itacoatiara power station was submitted in 2018, with preliminary estimates calling for commercial operation to begin in 2023.[7][8][9] The plant's preliminary license from Brazil's environmental authority IBAMA was issued in April 2019[10] and renewed in March 2021.[11][12]
The project was listed as a participant in Brazil's A-5 national energy auction in September 2021[13] and the LRCE (reserve capacity) auction in September 2022[14], but was not awarded a contract in either auction.[15] As of October 2023 the Itacoatiara power station continues to appear in Brazil's government database of proposed power plants.[16]
