According to a 2014 article in Science, geoscientists are researching whether two deadly earthquakes that struck the north of Italy in 2012 were triggered by the extraction of petroleum, due to a correlation between increased output from the Cavone oil field in 2011 and rising seismicity in the area by 2012. The earthquakes killed 27 people. The scientists ruled out a nearby natural gas field, as it had not been drilled before the quakes.
