JSW Ispat Special Products Raigarh steel plant, also known as Monnet Ispat & Energy Limited Raigarh; JISPL Raigarh, is a blast furnace (BF), direct reduced iron (DRI) and electric arc furnace (EAF) steel plant operating in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, India.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, India:

Background

The JSW Ispat Special Products Raigarh steel plant was established in 1994 by Monnet Ispat & Energy Limited, whose name was later changed to JSW Ispat Special Products Limited in 2020, after being acquired by JSW Steel in August 2018 following near-bankruptcy.[1][2] Prior to acquisition the plant was shut for over four years.[3]

In 2020, a blast occurred at the plant which killed two employees and injured two others.[4]

In 2021, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) formed a five-member committee to investigate citizens' reports about environmental norm violations at the Raigarh plant. The committee will research whether there has been non-compliance with the Water and Air Acts and Hazardous Waste Management Rules, and/or damage to agriculture and destruction of nearby mangroves.[5]

In June 2021, five employees working at the plant were injured and burned after hot ash fell on them.[6]
