JVR I Coal Mine

From Global Energy Monitor
(Redirected from JVR coal mine)

The Jalagam Vengala Rao (JVR) coal mine (previously "Sathupalli") was an opencast coal mine operated by Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India, in Khammam, Telangana, India.[1]

All substantial operations at the JVR OC I mine, which produced 2.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), ceased in 2021 due to the depletion of coal reserves at the site.[1][2]

Background

The Jalagam Vengala Rao opencast coal mine lies in the Sathupalli-Chintalapudi coal belt of Godavari Valley Coal Field.

The JVR OC I started production as "Sathupalli" opencast mine in 2005 at a capacity of 0.7 Mtpa.[3] The then-named Sathupalli coal mine received further environment clearance for increased production up to 2.5 MTPA in July 2007, at which point it was renamed "Jalagam Vengala Rao."[4] Despite receiving the EC years earlier, the mine didn't begin operating at this increased capacity until March 2015, after a forest clearance for an additional 136.5 hectare mining area was obtained.[5]

Coal Depletion

SCCL projected that coal reserves at the JVR OC I mine would be exhausted by the end of 2020 or 2021, at which time the mine would close. In preparation for this, the company proposed the Jalagam Vengala Rao II project (JVR II coal mine), which was granted environment clearance in March 2010 for the peak capacity of 5 MTPA over a lease area of 1409.81 hectares.[6]

The approved mining plan for JVR OC II included utilizing the voids of the JVR OC I mine for the dumping of overburden.[1]

All substantial operations at the JVR OC I mine ceased in 2021.[2]
