Background

The Jeebropilly mine has been known by many names, including "West Moreton," "Jeebropilly North," "Jeebropilly West," "7 Mile," "Smithfield," and "Thagoona Coal Mine." It was located adjacent to the Amberley Air Base, 23 kilometres west of Ipswich and 92 kilometres from the Port of Brisbane.[2]

In 2007, Jeebropilly was put in care-and-maintenance; it reopened in 2008.[3]

Closure

Jeebropilly permanently closed on December 20, 2019, after all economically viable coal reserves had been extracted. It was the last operating mine in Ipswich.[4] The mine was also New Hope Group's oldest operation.[5]

Rehabilitation of the mine site is currently underway, with its coal handling and preparation plant having been demolished in 2020.[2][6]
