Background

Units 1-4 of the plant are 600 MW each were built in 2006 and 2007. The plant was originally owned by Shenhua Group.[1]

CCS capability

In June 2021, a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project was commissioned on unit 1. The capacity is 150,000 tonnes of CO2 capture every year, which will be pumped underground into a nearby oil field for "enhanced oil recovery".[2]

Proposed expansion

An additional 2 x 1,000 MW has been announced.[3][4] The proposed capacity was later changed to 2 x 660 MW. Operation is planned for 2018.[5]

The new units were permitted for construction in December 2016.[6]

Nationwide Restrictions Imposed on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity

In January 2017 China's National Energy Administration proposed the suspension of over 100 planned and under-construction coal power projects with a total capacity of over 100GW in 13 provinces, including Shenhua Guohua Jinjie.[7]

For details, see China's 2016 Restrictions on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity.

2018: Construction begins

In May 2018 construction began on the units.[8]

2020: Units 5-6 commissioned

Units 5-6 were commissioned in December 2020.[9]

Ownership

On August 28, 2017, China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) announced that China Guodian Corporation and Shenhua Group will be jointly restructured. Shenhua Group will become China National Energy Investment Group and will absorb China Guodian Corporation. It will be the largest power company in the world by installed capacity, as well as the world's largest coal producer.[10][11] The merger was completed on November 28, 2017.[12]
