Background

The Jorong Barutuma Gretson (JBG) is an opencast coal mine, operated by PT Jorong Barutuma Gretson, a subsidiary of Inda Tambangraya Megah located 105 km south of Banjarmasi, South Kalimantan, Indonesia.

In 2017, the mine closed due to reserve depletion, but in 2019 was open again with an estimated reserve size of 11.8 million tonnes.[3] According to petromindo.com, JBG operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Indonesia-listed mining firm PT Inda Tambangraya Megah Tbk. (ITM) whose shares are majority-owned by the BanpuGroupofThailand (BanpuPie.) through PT Centralink Wisesa International (CWI).” [4]

Production at the mine began in 1999 and, according to petromindo.com in 2016, was planned to cease in 2017, due to reserves depletion.
