Background
In May 2021 a fire at the Juan Bautista Arismendi plant resulted in the shutdown of both units.[16] In early August 2021, the power station was still reported to be non-operational[17], but later that month government officials announced that unit 2 had been restored to service.[18] In October 2021, government officials visited the plant and reaffirmed that unit 2 was back online.[19] In November 2021, Corpoelec blamed a new turbine failure on "acts of vandalism" against the power station.[20] Turbine 2 was apparently back online as of November 2022, though experiencing intermittent service disruptions due to maintenance issues affecting the gas pipeline that supplies the plant.[21]
