Background
In April 2025, the Kentucky Municipal Energy Agency (KYMEA) began construction of the KYMEA Energy Center I in Madisonville, KY. The new plant is designed for 75 MW of capacity and will feature four Wartsila 18V50SG reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE) generators, each with a nominal capacity of 18.8 MW. Designed for both continuous and peaking service, the plant will be capable of multiple quick starts and stops per day, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness to the Agency’s energy needs. Commercial operation is expected to begin in the summer of 2027.[1][4]
