Hospet Steels Hospet plant, also known as Kalyani Steels, HSL, is a steel plant in Hospet, Ginigera, Vijayanagara, Karnataka, India that operates blast furnace (BF), induction furnace (IF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), electric arc furnace (EAF), and direct reduced iron (DRI) technology.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Hospet, Ginigera, Vijayanagara, Karnataka, India:
- Location: Hospet, Kanakapur, Karnataka, India
- Coordinates (WGS 84): 15.339055, 76.251696 (exact)
Background
Hospet Steels Limited was established in 1973 producing steel through primary route.[1] Kalyani Hospet steel plant was established in 1998. The plant houses three mini blast furnaces, basic oxygen furnace with multiple downstream steel products manufacturing facilities.[2]
The plant is expanding its production capacity by 500 ttpa using the BOF route and 40 ttpa using the EAF facility, both of which are expected to become operational by 2025.[3] According to a 2014 pre-feasibility report, the capacity of the plant was being expanded to 1400 ttpa in two phases. The first phase involved addition of a blast furnace, a DRI plant, two BOF units and induction furnace and the second phase involved addition of an EAF and related downstream production facilities.[4] The environmental clearance for the proposal was obtained on 19 January, 2016[5][6]
As of November 2024, there hasn't been any updates on the expansion project.
Mukund Sumi Special Steel placed an order with Danieli for a new blooming mill of capacity 300 ttpa, which will be installed at the Hospet plant in September 2025, and is expected to be operational by the end of 2026.[7]
As of October 2025, there has been no update on the capacity expansion of crude steel at the plant.
