Background
As of December 2025, Kanona Power Co. Ltd. was planning to build a 300 MW coal-fired power plant in Mukuni village, located on 200 hectares of land behind the Mukuni substation. According to a project consultant, project plans included a 5.5 km railway line to import coal from Zimbabwe, and a 9.5 km pipeline to transport water from the Zambezi River. A 150 MW solar farm would also reportedly be developed across from the coal plant.[1]
In April 2026, the CEO of Kanona Power reportedly said that construction on the coal plant was slated to start in May 2026. The coal plant would be built in two phases with the first 150 MW unit expected to be completed in late 2027. Kanona Power was finalizing the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with Esheng PTE Ltd.[2]
Financing
According to reporting from April 2026, the coal power station was expected to cost US$160–180 million.[2]
