Background

The Katowice PKE power plant was originally built in 1985 as a heating plant, with two 144 megawatt thermal (MWt) units.[1] Another 233 MWt heating unit was added in 1991. In 1999, a new coal-fired unit with a heat capacity of 200 MW and electric generation capacity of 135.5 MW was added.[1]

In 2014, the owner of the plant, Tauron Ciepło, invested around PLN 66 million for the construction of three new oil and gas boilers with a total capacity of around 114 MWt.[2] These new boilers were completed in February 2016.[3]

According to Climate Analytics' 2017 report, the plant should be shut down in 2025 to meet Poland’s climate targets.[4]

In November 2022, the INSTRAT database listed 2030 as a possible retirement year for the power station.[5]
