Keban Agung power station is an operating power station of at least 270-megawatts (MW) in West Merapi, Lahat, South Sumatra, Indonesia. It is also known as 南苏拉哈电站.

Background
The Keban Agung power station is a two-unit, 270-MW mine-mouth coal-fired power plant in South Sumatra Province. The plant was built by PT Priamanaya Energi, a subsidiary of Priamanaya Djan International.[1][2] Total cost on the project is $310 million, and financing was arranged by a syndicate of banks, led by Bank Negara Indonesia.[3]
Ground was broken on the project in July 2009, with completion initially scheduled for 2012.[3] Later, the completion date was postponed to 2015.
In January 2013 a worker died during construction, after apparently falling only 3 meters.[4] In January and February 2015, Lahat Regency officials visiting the site found hundreds of foreign workers apparently working illegally.[5][6]
The project began operating in 2015.[7]
Opposition and impact
In June 2023, nearby residents held an action outside of Keban Agung power station. Organizers claimed that the local community did not benefit from the power station and were not given fair opportunities for employment.[8]
In November 2023, local residents installed a solar array and held an accompanying action against the coal-fired power station.[9]
In December 2023, a Mongabay article described the environmental and public health impacts of Keban Agung power station on the nearby community.[10]
In August 2025, farmers surrounding the Keban Agung power station area reportedly stated that the water quality of the Lematang River tributaries was degrading.[11]
In October 2025, Lahat residents recounted reduced harvests and fish catches allegedly associated with Keban Agung power station.[12]
In December 2025, community members living close to the Trans-Sumatra Highway were calling for a coal transportation moratorium for the road, which reportedly supplied Keban Agung power station.[13]
In January 2026, reporting stated that ash from the power station was stored "without adequate lining" (Google translate). Nearby residents stated that farm yields were decreasing, and acute respiratory infections were increasing.[14]
Financing
In November 2009, a financing agreement for the project was closed. US$238.04 million in loans was provided by Bank Negara Indonesia, PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Barat dan Banten, PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Tengah, and Bank Pembangunan Daerah Sumatera Selatan dan. US$113.18 million in equity was provided by PT Priamanaya Energi.[15]
