Background
In April 2010, India's Economic Times reported that NTPC said it would carry out projects of over 7,500 MW capacity in Madhya Pradesh in the next five to six years, including construction of three coal-based power projects in the districts of Bamitha, Gadarwara, and Khargaone. Of the projects, NTPC Chairman and Managing Director R S Sharma said "studies are on and the detailed project report and feasibility report would be complete in next six months, and within one year we can start working on these projects."[2]
In June 2014 NTPC invited bids for construction of the 1,320-MW Khargone thermal project, estimated to cost Rs 7,000 crore.[3]
The terms of reference was extended in July 2014.[4]
Environmental clearance for the 1320 MW power station was granted on 31 March, 2015.[5] The condition was that coal transportation should be by rail, the sulphur and ash content of coal shall not exceed 0.5 per cent and 43 per cent, respectively, and that satellite imagery shall be submitted annually to monitor alterations of the area. In April 2015 infrastructure firm Larsen & Toubro was chosen by NTPC to set up the power project.[6]
In April 2015, it was reported that Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a Rs 5580-crore turnkey contract from NTPC Limited for design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of the project under ultra-supercritical parameters, a first for India. It is anticipated that manufacturing will take place at Hazira in Gujarat, through joint venture companies with Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems.[7]
Construction began in 2016, with commissioning planned for 2019.[8]
Unit 1 was commissioned in September 2019.[9] Unit 2 began commercial operation in April 2020.[10]
