Background

The Khushuut mine is operated by Leighton Asia and owned by Mongolia Energy Corporation, a Hong Kong listed public company in Mongolia.[10] The Khushuut coal mine is situated in the Khovd Province of western Mongolia, approximately 1,350 km west of Ulaanbaatar. Owned by Mongolia Energy Corporation (MEC), the mine is spread over 600ha (6 square kilometers).

The Khushuut coal deposit contained 460 million tonnes of coking coal reserves, ranking it among the largest deposits in Asia and globally.[11]

MEC commenced trial production with the first ore shipped in October 2010. The company is planning to produce about 3Mt of coal in the first year by the end of 2011. It intends to expand the capacity to more than 5Mt in the future.[12]
