Background

In June 2019, PERENCO announced its plan to build a gas plant in two phases. The first 100 MW will require an investment of US $180 million. And the second phase will bring the total installed capacity to 200 -250 MW. The total cost was estimated to be US $250 million.[5]

The construction of the power plant is part of the emergency plan of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which aims to increase access to electricity for the people of the mineral-rich Central African nation.[6] In 2019 the country had a total generation capacity of 2500 MW for an electrification rate of 10%.[7] However, dependence on hydropower makes available capacity fluctuate, especially during low water periods. The energy from the Kinkasi power station is expected to unlock several projects in the mining sector in Katanga and Kongo Central industries as well as provide power to households.[8]

In March 2022, it was announced that several Congolese companies had joined forces with PERENCO to develop the gas-fired power plant project in the Kongo-Central province.[9]
