Background on Mine

The proposed Kurasia Underground Coal Mining Project of 0.50 MTPA on a mining lease area of 523.30 ha operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited, is located in Chirimiri area, PO West Chirimiri Colliery, District Korba, State Chhattisgarh, India. The project received its environment clearance for the capacity 0.50 MTPA on 9 May 2006. However, the EC lapsed and SECL had to apply for the revalidation of the environment clearance granted to the project on 20 June 2006. In 40th EAC (thermal and coal mining projects), MoEF&CC India, meeting held on 26 October 2018, the company was asked to conduct EIA/EMP study again.[1]

Meanwhile, the Kurasia opencast mine exhausted its capacity and hence has been closed.[2] The underground mine can now start only after regrant of the EC from the MoEF&CC India.
