Background

WCGPL is a captive power plant of 123 MW operating in Welspun city, Anjar, Bhuj Dist., Gujarat, supplying power to Welspun Group companies.[1] In August 2007, Environmental Clearance (EC) was granted to Welspun to establish a 123 MW captive power plant. A 43 MW was reportedly operational by September 2007.[2] An 80 MW unit appeared to be operating around 2012-13.[3]

The EC was formally split between two units in January 2012:

  • 43 MW CPP in the name of M/s. Welspun Corp Ltd (WCL)
  • 80 MW CPP in the name of M/s. Welspun Captive Power Generation Limited (WCPGL), under the Welspun Group Company[4]

In March 2019, WCL announced divestment of the 43 MW unit and WCPGL completed the acquisition in 2020.[5]

In March 2022 and July 2022, the Thermal Expert Appraisal Committee considered and approved a formal proposal to transfer the Environmental Clearance of the 43 MW unit from M/s Welspun Corp Ltd to M/s Welspun Captive Power Generation Ltd.[4][6]
