Background

Kyrgayskaya Coal Mine (шахта Кыргайская) is an underground mine in Kemerevo Oblast, Russia. [3]

The Kyrgayskaya coal mine is owned and operated by Shahtoupravlenie Taldinskoe-Kyrgayskoe JSC, which is owned by Taldinskaya Mining Company.[4][5]

The underground mine was commissioned in 1989 with capacity of 500 thousand tonnes per annum. Following substantial investments into modern mining equipment, the mine reached capacity of 3 million tonnes by 2016.[6]

Thermal coal produced by the mine used to be sold to power stations in Germany, Finland, Netherlands, UK, Italy and other European countries. Coal is also exported to Turkey, Morocco, Japan, China and South Korea.[3]

In 2019, the International Centre for Policy Studies reported that UGMK Holding and Carbo One Ltd have restructured their coal export operations and may be recording coal the comes from the Donbass region of the Ukraine as being from the Kyrgayskaya coal mine. This is due to the possibility of international sanctions restricting coal exports from Donbass.[7]

In 2019, there was one fatality at the mine as a result of unexpected collapse.[8]

In 2021, 24 administrative cases were brought against the mine. Violations were discovered with respect to buildings' and structures' safety, inadequate fire protection of the buildings and inadequate air-gas control systems not in line with the prescribed manner.[9]

In 2022, the mine had to pay a fine of RUB200 thousand (ca USD 3000) due to insufficient protective equipment available for mine workers.[10]
