Background

The project is located at the site of the former Somerset Generation Plant, also known as the Niagara Coal Plant, which was shut down in 2019. Through its subsidiaries, the site is currently owned by Terawulf, which has begun construction on four new buildings to house a future 500 MW of total installed capacity for cryptocurrency mining and other data processing services.[1] As of July 2022, the site is currently mining 110 MW while construction for additional capacity is underway.[2] While currently only authorized for approximately 110 MW, should it succeed in obtaining a full 500 MW, it would become one of the largest data processing centers in the US. Infrastructure and buildings related to the former coal plant are currently being demolished; that work is being supervised by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.[3]

While Beowulf's plans consist of the four buildings for cryptocurrency mining and data processing, other companies are also interested in the property. Those new uses could include solar electric generation at the site in what is proposed as the Empire State Data Hub.[4]
