Background

Lakkia Coal Mine is a surface lignite mine owned by Greece's state-owned Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC) in West Macedonia, Greece.

The mine, which had permanently ceased operations in 2021, was recently reopened to supply coal to the Ptolemaida V, Agios Dimitrios, and Meliti power stations, whose 2023 closures were delayed until 2025.[4][5][6][7] Greece's state-owned electric power company, Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC), owns and operates the Lakkia mine.

Lakkia Mine began operating around 2008, but was put on care and maintenance some time later, as the need for lignite decreased and its operation was deemed economically unviable due to the poor coal deposit. After the June 2017 landslide in Amyntaio, Lakkia's operations restarted in order to meet the lignite needs of AIS Amyntaio.[7] At that time, it produced 2.5 million tonnes of coal per year.[7]

According to PPC, mining at Lakkia permanently ceased in 2021.[4] However, in September 2022, PPC announced its plans to reopen the Lakkia mine in order to meet increased needs for lignite and supply the Ptolemaida V, Agios Dimitrios, and Meliti power stations, whose 2023 closures were delayed until 2025.[4]
