The Lohari Opencast Coal Project is a proposed opencast mine, operated by Araanya Mines Private Limited, a subsidiary of Aloke Steels Industries, producing 0.2 million tonnes per annum, near the villages of Lohanra, Kathautia, Gareiadih, Garikhas, Tehsil Patan, in Palamau, Jharkand, India.

Background on Mine

The proposed Lohari Opencast Coal Project of 0.2 MTPA on mining lease area of 450 ha is located in villages Lohanra, Kathautia, Gareiadih, Garikhas, Tehsil Patan, District Palamau, State Jharkand, India.

The mine was first allotted to Usha Martin Limited for which the environment clearance was obtained on 13 March 2008. The Public Hearing for the project was held on 4 May 2007 which involves R&R of 4 villages in the core zone – Lohanra, Kathautia, Gareiadih, Garikhas involving 658 land losers inlcuding 304 homesteads. Life of the mine at the rated capacity of 0.2 MTPA is 45 years.[1].

However, the mine was cancelled by Supreme Court in wake of the coalgate scam and further allotted by Ministry of Coal on 22 April 2015 to Araanya Mines Private Limited a joint venture of M/s Aloke Steels Industries Pvt. Ltd. and M/s Maa Chhinnmastika Cement and Ispat Pvt. Subsequently the Environment Clearance was trasferred on 10 June 2015[2] The mined coal will be used for production of Sponge Iron.[3]
