Background

The Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ) coal mine is an opencast mine, operated by PT Mahakam Sumber Jaya, a subsidariy of Harum Energy, near Samarinda, Tenggarong Senerang, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantanin, Indonesia.[11] PT Mahakam Sumber Jaya, a subsidariy of Harum Energy, operates the Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ) coal mine. The production at the mine has declined from 4.5 million tonnes per annum in 2016.[12] Harum Energy's coal mining concessions, including MSJ, cover a combined area of approximately 47,000 hectares in East Kalimantan.[13]

In November 2025, MSJ's legal representative stated that enforcement activity by Indonesia's Forest Area Enforcement Task Force (Satgas PKH) in Kutai Kartanegara Regency targeted unlicensed mining (PETI) conducted by other parties near the company's concession, and did not involve MSJ's own licensed operations. The representative said the company had previously reported the unlicensed mining activity to law enforcement authorities, which resulted in a legally binding court ruling, and stated that the company supported the task force's enforcement efforts.[14]

MSJ's mining permit area is also among the licenses reported by Minerba One Map Indonesia (MOMI) data as valid through 2034 in Samarinda, according to local outlet Niaga.Asia.[15]
