Background

Malahat LNG Terminal was a proposed LNG terminal in British Columbia, Canada.

In 2014, Steelhead LNG applied for licenses to export a cumulative 4.25 bcf/d from one or more liquefaction terminals in British Columbia, with first export anticipated in 2019.

In 2015, the National Energy Board approved the applications, 1 of which was allocated to Malahat LNG for 6 mtpa, the other 4 allocated to Sarita LNG (later renamed Kwispaa LNG) for a 24 mtpa project.

Per Sightline Institute's 2017 report, "The Malahat facility would rely on natural gas delivered by the Island Gas Connector, an 81-mile pipeline proposed by Williams Pipeline Northwest. The new pipeline would begin in Washington State at Northwest Pipeline’s Canadian gas interconnect at Sumas, run along the floor of the Salish Sea for nearly 50 miles, and connect to the proposed Malahat LNG facility. The pipeline would traverse the treaty-protected fishing areas of several tribes, including the Lummi Nation... Steelhead intends to make an investment decision on Malahat in 2018."

Malahat LNG would have taken the form of a floating liquefaction production and export facility at a site on Bamberton industrial land owned by the Malahat Nation.

The project was cancelled in December 2017, with Steelhead LNG planning to focus on its Kwispaa LNG project instead.
