Background
Marmara LNG Terminal is an LNG import onshore terminal in Tekirdag, Turkey.[5] Construction of the terminal began in 1989.[6] The plant is a base load plant and a means of peak shaving for gas purchased as LNG that is used to store imported LNG, dispatch regasified LNG via pipelines, and load LNG to trucks.[6] The terminal has three 85.000 cubic meters storage tankers.[6]
In January 2025, Botas launched a tender for the construction of a fourth tank at the facility, which would increase its storage capacity.[7]
Note the 2025 GIIGNL Annual Report listed the terminal's capcity as 4.6 mtpa, while the 2026 listed it as 8.8 mtpa with no explanation for the change. BOTAS' website lists it as higher — 37 million cubic meters per day — which converts to around 9.6 mtpa. The 8.8 mtpa value is chosen in this case to align with GIIGNL's most recent report.[8]
On 13 July 2026, BOTAŞ began construction of a fourth LNG storage tank (160,000 cbm) at the terminal, per Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, raising total on-site LNG storage capacity from 255,000 to 415,000 cubic meters (a ~60% increase). GIIGNL's nameplate capacity figure for the site (8.8 MTPA) is unaffected by this storage increase.[9][10]
