Background

As per 2011 report, the Maw Taung coal mine owned by Saraburi Coal Company and Myanmar Economic Corporation was actively mining in the Taninthayi State.[1]

The coal deposit lies approximately 25 km west from the Thai-Myanmar border, near Prachuab Khirikhan province.

As per 2017-2018 report by Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative report, the privately-owned Mawdaung opencast mine in Taninthayi division is producing over 500,000 tonnes annually which are exported across the border to Thailand.[2]

However according to 2018 report on the "Best Practices of Mine Rehabilitation and Decommissioning" (page 124), coal mining appeared to have discontinued at this site.[3]
