Background

The coal-fired power plant is part of the Mawlamyine Cement Mawlamyine Cement Plant, rising controversies and concerns by local residents. The residents didn't know the power plant was fueled by coal, and they are concerned about the adverse impacts on local people's health and declining water quality in the area. In 2020, the plant suspended its operations due to a lack of raw materials. The closure was welcomed by locals who opposed the factory's reliance on coal.
