Background

The coal-fired power plant is part of the Mawlamyine Cement Mawlamyine Cement Plant, rising controversies and concerns by local residents[3]. The residents didn't know the power plant was fueled by coal, and they are concerned about the adverse impacts on local people's health and declining water quality in the area[4]. In 2020, the plant suspended its operations due to a lack of raw materials. The closure was welcomed by locals who opposed the factory's reliance on coal[5].
