Background
In December 2025, a social media post from a news outlet in Zambia stated that the Mazabuka Municipal Council had approved the allocation of land for a 200 MW thermal power plant by Atlas Energy. The project was expected to be built at the Ngwenya Quarry. In a video interview from January 2026, the mayor of Mazabuka said that the project would source coal from Maamba.
In May 2026, reporting indicated that the power station would have a capacity of 270 MW.[4]
In June 2026, a social media post by the Mazabuka Municipal Council referred to a 135 MW power plant in Ngwenya by Atlas Energy, which presumably represented the project’s first unit. The 135 MW unit was reportedly under construction and expected to be completed in April 2027. Photos from the project site appeared to show construction progress.
