Background

This project is currently under construction.[10]

In 2017, General Electric won the project's engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreement of US $390 million.[11]

In March 2019, Summit Meghnaghat II Power Company Limited (SMIIPCL), a subsidiary of Summit Group, and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) signed a 22-year power purchase agreement related to the plant.[11]

The plant is part of Bangladesh's goal of adding 40 GW of installed power capacity by 2030.[12]

Financing

Commencing commercial operations in 2024, the power plant was estimated to have cost US$510 million to build and develop.[13][14] The UK-based commercial bank Standard Chartered and the International Finance Corporation, the private finance arm of the World Bank, each provided loans of US$175 million for the project. SERV, Switzerland's export credit agency coordinated and backed the financing deal.[15] An equity investment totalling USD$150 million was made by General Electric, Chubu Electric Power, and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).[16]
