Background

Mine at Coc Sau is operated by Coc Sau Coal Joint-Stock Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Coal (Vinacomin), in Cam Pha, Quang Ninh, Vietnam.[14] The mine is operated by Coc Sau Coal Joint-Stock Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Coal (Vinacomin).[14]

Effective July 1, 2024, Coc Sau was consolidated with the neighboring Deo Nai mine into a single entity, Deo Nai – Coc Sau Coal Joint Stock Company – TKV, following a corporate restructuring approved by shareholders.[15] A 2025 industry report described a subsequent 2,075-billion-đồng expansion project covering the merged Coc Sau–Deo Nai operations, intended to raise combined output to more than 2.5 million tonnes of coal per year by sharing infrastructure such as power substations, stockyards, haul roads and wastewater treatment between the two adjacent pits.[16]

Coc Sau is regarded as one of the largest and longest-operating open-pit anthracite mines in Quảng Ninh Province.[17] As of 2023, the mine's excavation had reached a depth approaching -300 meters, which state media described as giving Coc Sau a "three firsts" distinction among TKV's open-pit mines: the deepest, the most operationally difficult, and the one with the greatest volume of mud and water to manage; that year the mine targeted extracting more than 1.5 million tonnes of raw coal, an increase of 200,000 tonnes over the prior year.[18]

As with other mines in the Quảng Ninh coalfield, Coc Sau's output is primarily thermal-grade anthracite, characteristic of the region's coal reserves, which account for the large majority of Vietnam's total coal resources.[19]
