Background

Miningstore opened its bitcoin mining facility next to an electric substation in Grundy County at the beginning of 2020, the first of its kind in the state, attracted to the location by cheap energy. While the operating capacity of the facility is currently 6 MW, the company has plans to expand to 18 MW. [1] The power for the facility is sourced from the local utility operation, Grundy County REC. Grundy County REC is one of the nine members of the Corn Belt Cooperative. [2] On its website, Miningstore highlights its arrangement with the local utility, particularly its position as a load resource. The facility operates 24/7, but reduces its usage when the utility is facing peak load. It also buys excess power available to the local grid that would otherwise be sold to other states. The company also highlights its Grundy County REC's reliance on wind power, noting that "Wind energy powers 57% of Iowa’s net electric generation, the highest share of any state." [3] The power for the facility is sourced from the local utility operation, Grundy County REC. Grundy County REC is one of the nine members of the Corn Belt Cooperative. It should be noted that while wind energy may make up 57% of the state's electric generation, Grundy County REC remains highly reliant on coal with 50% of its power being sourced from it (more than it was in 2005). According to the utility Co-op, renewables make up less than 20% of its supply. [4]
