Background

The Mogoin Gol coal mine (Могойн голын) is a surface coal mine in Khövsgöl Province, Mongolia. It is located 880 kilometres from Ulaanbaatar, and 209 kilometres from Mörön, the capital of Khövsgöl Province.

The mine was estimated to have 16 million tons of coal reserves in 1976-1978. The mine was put into operation in 1971, and was privatized in 1994. The deposit area covers 66,000 hectares. Mine life was estimated at 30 years. Before the mid-2010s, the mine supplied coal domestically, and produced an estimated 10,000 tons of coal annually. In 2009, it was estimated that 2.2 million tons of coal had so far been produced and 11.4 million tons were still left.

Of the mine's total reserves, 80% has been classified as coking coal suitable for export, and 20% as thermal coal for energy use.

As of 2017, the company employed 70 people. The company is listed on the Mongolian Stock Exchange.

In 2017, the company sold 73,000 tonnes of coal, generating revenue of MNT 2.5 billion. Of this, 18,000 tonnes were exported to China, 20,000 tonnes were supplied to Zavkhan Province, and the remainder met local demand. In 2018 the mine produced 250,000 tons of coal. In April 2019, the mine's export license was suspended due to "violations related to coal transportation and technological procedures."

In 2019, 250,000 tonnes of coal were extracted, of which 194,000 tonnes were sold. In 2022, revenue reached MNT 6.9 billion (US$2.2 million), with net profit of MNT 1.2 billion (US$380,000), an increase of 53.6% compared to the prior year. Coal is transported by truck from the mine to Erdenet, and from there by rail to China.

In 2023, the mine's chief engineer O.Uuganbayar stated that the company planned to extract 250,000 tonnes of coal and export 150,000 tonnes to China during the year.

As of June 2025, the mine remained in operation, continuing to supply coal to Khövsgöl and Zavkhan provinces.

Planned coal plant near mine

In December 2009 the Yuanda Group and New Asia Mining Group announced that they had signed a contract with the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, Mongolia to construct the Telmen Thermal Power Plant near the mine. The Chinese company, CMEC Corporation, is a contractor for the construction work. The plant entered construction in 2015 and is planned for operation in 2023.
