Background

Greener Ideas was set up as a joint venture between Bord Gáis Energy and Mountside Properties in 2009 to develop a 100 MW[6] open cycle gas turbine plant.[7] As of 2018, Greener Ideas had planning permission granted but had not begun construction. However, in 2017 Kilkenny County Council received an application from Greener Ideas for the construction of a 100MW battery energy storage system. According to news reports, only one of the two technologies would be built.[7]

In 2022, the project was revised and awarded capacity in the 2025-26 T-4 Capacity Market.[8]This project will be part of 9 new gas plants being built in Ireland to meet growing power needs in conjunction with a move away from coal.[9]
