Background

Mooiplaats coal mine is an underground mine in the Ermelo coal field in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The Mooiplaats colliery (MPC) is located approximately 2.5 kilometers (km) south-southeast of Eskom's Camden Power Station, and approximately 16 km southeast of the town of Ermelo. The mining rights area covers portions 1 and 9 of the farm Mooiplaats 290IT.[2]

Since the MPC opened in 2009, it has been owned by various coal companies at different stages of its operation, including Coal of Africa Limited, Blackspear Holdings (from 2014), MC Mining, and Mooiplaats Coal Holdings (from 2018).[3][4][5] As of 2020, South African-based Langcarel Rf (Pty) Ltd. owns the mining right.[6]

MPC was placed under care and maintenance in October 2013, but re-commenced operations in January 2018. Its mine life is forecast to end in 2028.[6]
