Background
The National Cement Company plant in Yemen began operating in 2008. It was upgraded in the late 2010s to a capacity of 2.7 million tonnes per year.[3] Nearby residents and researchers found that the plant has contributed to a significant degradation in the environment surrounding the plant, including air pollution linked to a number of illnesses in the surrounding community.[4]
