Background
The Nam Mẫu Coal Mine is an operating underground coal mine in Quảng Ninh Province, Vietnam. The Nam Mẫu coal mine is an underground coal mine. It is operated by Nam Mẫu Coal Company (Công ty Than Nam Mẫu), a subsidiary of state-owned coal company Vinacomin.[15][16][17] It was formally established on April 1, 1999, through the merger of two predecessor mines — Than Thung Mine and Yen Tu Mine — themselves the product of a long sequence of mergers among coal-construction and exploration units operating in the Mao Khe–Uong Bi area since the 1970s and 1980s.[18] The merged operation was named Nam Mẫu Coal Mine under Uong Bi Coal Company, redesignated Nam Mẫu Coal Enterprise in 2001, converted to a single-member limited liability company in 2006, brought directly under the Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group (TKV) in 2008, renamed Nam Mẫu Coal Company – Vinacomin in 2010, and restructured again in August 2013 as a direct branch of TKV under its current name, Nam Mẫu Coal Company – TKV.[18] The company mines coal exclusively underground, with no surface operations.[18]
As of March 2023, Nam Mẫu Coal Company was described by Nhân Dân newspaper as one of TKV's key underground coal producers and as facing the most difficult mining conditions of any unit in the Group, operating 10 longwall faces at around the -150 m level.[19] For 2023, the company targeted production of over 2.2 million tonnes of coal, with a first-quarter target of over 500,000 tonnes (about 25% of the annual plan).[19]
For 2025, the company set a target of 2.75 million tonnes of raw coal — its highest-ever underground production target — and pursued this through technical and organizational measures including a new mechanized longwall face at the -110/-100 m level (designed capacity 1,500 tonnes/day), modern excavation equipment, and upgrades to mine ventilation and drainage systems.[20] In the first nine months of 2025 the company produced over 2.1 million tonnes of raw coal (81.6% of its annual plan), sold more than 1.9 million tonnes, generated an estimated VND 3,240 billion in revenue, and paid average worker income of VND 22.7 million/month.[20]
