New Century City power station (Шинэ Зуунмод хотын цахилгаан станц) is an announced power station in New Century City, Töv, Mongolia. It is also known as Хүннү хот цахилгаан станц, Hunnu City Thermal Power Plant.

Background
In November 2024, the mayor of Ulaanbaatar stated that a new satellite city — New Century City (Шинэ Зуунмод хотын) — would be established on 31,500 hectares of land in the Sergelen and Altanbulag soums of Töv Province. A priority project for New Century City included a proposed combined heat and power plant producing 250 MW of electricity, built through a public-private partnership.[4][5]
As of December 2024, engineering works on city infrastructure had begun.[6]
In January 2025, a news article mentioning the 250 MW thermal power plant also noted that the acting mayor of New Century City said the city would be powered by renewable energy.[7]
By April 2025, the Mongolian government reportedly changed the name of the satellite city from New Century City to “Khunnu City” [Google Translate] and said the city’s electricity needs would be met by renewable energy including solar, wind, and battery storage.[8][9]
In April 2026, the executive director of the “Hunnu City Development Corporation” reportedly said that the proposed 250 MW thermal power plant would source coal from Baganuur, Shivee-Ovoo, and Buuruljuut. Site preparations were reportedly underway at a location adjacent to the railway in Hunnu City. Construction was expected to take 24–36 months.[10][11]
Financing
In April 2026, ESight reported that the proposed New Century City would require an estimated investment of US$678.1 million. According to the report, 90% of the plant was expected to be built through private-sector investment, while Ulaanbaatar city could own up to 10%. No named private investor, lender, financial close, EPC contractor, or equipment supplier was identified.[12]
