Background

The New Vaal coal mine is an operating coal mine south of Vereeniging, in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The New Vaal coal mine was established in 1983 to supply Eskom’s Lethabo Power Station. The operation uses opencast strip mining methods to mine the remnant coal pillars that resulted from the underground extraction mining methods practiced in the area in the 1960’s.[3]

In 2018, Anglo American sold New Denmark to Seriti Resources, the mine's current owners.[4]

According to Seriti Resources' website, the mine currently produces at a rate of 17Mtpa and aims to supply Eskom’s Lethabo Power Station with additional coal resources until 2039.[3]
