Background

The goal of this pipeline, according to National Grid, was to increase the company’s safety, reliability, and operational flexibility. Construction would invovle a 7-mile, high-pressure, 30-in pipeline that would traverse the neighborhoods of Brownsville, Bedford Stuyvesant, Bushwick, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint.

This pipeline was proposed to transport natural gas from Pennsylvania to two preexisting National Grid pipelines in Brooklyn. The end goal was to connect the new pipeline to a liquefied natural gas facility located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York, United States.

Construction began in 2017.[5] After protests and multiple lawsuits, the fourth phase of the pipeline, the Greenpoint portion of the project, was halted in 2020.[5]

As of July 2022, the final phase appeared not to have been permitted yet, and the project was still considered under construction.

After ongoing lawsuits, National Grid withdrew its permit application to complete the pipeline in April 2023.[4] As of 2025 there had been no reported progress on the pipeline beyond this, and it was considered cancelled as of 2023.

Opposition

The pipeline's construction has encountered major grassroots opposition. As of May 2022, four out of five phases had been built, and the organization No North Brooklyn Pipeline was fighting to prevent approval of the final stage.
