Project details

  • Operator: Woodside Energy
  • Parent company: Woodside Energy Ltd.; BHP Group Ltd; BP Developments Australia; Chevron Australia; Japan Australia LNG (MIMI); Shell Development (Australia)
  • Capacity: 131.75 million cubic feet per day / 139 terajoules per day
  • Length: 134 kilometers[2]
  • Status: Operating
  • Start year: 1984

Background

The pipeline was commissioned in 1984 as part of the North West Shelf Project.[3] North Rankin A was the then-largest gas production platform in the world, capable of producing 1815 million cubic feet (51.4 million cubic meters) of gas per day and up to 47400 barrels per day (7540 cubic meters per day) of condensate.

Modifications have increased the facility's capacity by 50% and it remains one of the world's largest gas platforms. It is located 135 kilometers northwest of Karratha and can accommodate more than 120 people. It services 25 production wells in the North Rankin and Perseus fields.[4] In 2012 the North Rankin B Platform was built and connected to North Rankin A by two bridges.[5] At the time of its construction North Rankin B was the largest offshore gas platform in the world.[6]

TSEP to NWS Pipeline

In 2004 a second pipeline from North Rankin A to Western Australia was commissioned, the TPES to NWS Pipeline. This 130-kilometer pipeline connects to the Karratha Gas Plant.[2] It is operated by Woodside Energy and owned by the consortium that owns the North Rankin Platform: Woodside Energy Ltd.; BHP Billiton Petroleum; BP Developments Australia; Chevron Australia; Japan Australia LNG (MIMI); Shell Development (Australia.
